A Few of My Favorite Things

So a lot of people ask me what I do when I am not doing the internet marketing, video and crowdfunding stuff. I’m lucky that my mom and my sister are my best friends and that they like the same kind of stuff that I like.

At home I love to read, watch old movies from the 50’s and 60’s, sew, knit, listen to music and play my cello. I am writing a book now and also learning more about editing images and graphics. Zanna does so much of my powerpoints and website stuff and I want to learn more so I can do it myself. She cooks too, the best food anyone has every tasted and I love when she tries new dishes. My family has to have a cookbook from every country and culture and we like to eat foods from around the world. Trying new things is very cool.  You can see some of the things Zanna has cooked here.

When we go out I like to go to places that are out of the way and hidden from the mainstream. We travel a lot and when we do, we take the back roads and my mom stops where ever we think looks cool, fun and interesting. We learn so much when doing this and we meet some really interesting people. It’s almost like geography and history in one. We’re not afraid to go to different kinds of places and when we do, there is always a pleasant surprise waiting to be uncovered. Our unscheduled “let’s just drive” adventures are always the best. My mom says we must drive over 25,000 miles a year. (I think it’s more). Because of my moms work with experts, sometimes we get invited to their guesthouse to stay while my mom works with them. We see so many places this way.  I love that my mom is an adventurer and that we can just pick up and go in a moment’s notice and that she’s taught me to do that. It is because of this that we can have the adventures that we have.

When we go to shows like the theater, symphonies or concerts I learn so much too. My mom said we were going to see Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’. Zanna was excited, but I didn’t know what it was so my mom ordered me a book that I read in one day. Finally I understand Shakespeare and who he is. The same thing happened when we went to see ‘The Grapes of Wrath’. Zanna plays guitar and violin and because of that my mom got us tickets to see 2CELLOS. Oh my gosh, that changed my life! I told my mom I wanted to play something too and within a couple of week Charles (what I named my beautiful instrument) and I met. Hearing their music and connecting with them on Twitter has inspired me to write a children’s book that I am working on now. It also is making me learn about people like Mozart, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Paganini and others.

I am grateful that I have parents who support my interests and bring these things into my life. The coolest thing is that my sister is my bestest friend because we like so much of the same stuff. Another thing I am super grateful for is that they totally supports my interests and hobbies. My mom does this for my sister Zanna and my brother Zachary too. She always has, and that is cool.

So those are a few of my favorite things, but my family is my favorite thing of all.

Lots of pictures are on my moms facebook… you can see them!

Leave My Hair Alone

My Mama has this weird thing about hair. We don’t get our hair cut. When my brother Zack was small (until he was 14) he never cut his hair. It went way past his waist. When my Grandma cut my bangs, my Mama cried and cried and told me to never, ever, ever, ever let anyone ever cut my hair. She told me it was mine and it is a natural part of the way I am made. When my sister Zanna trimmed her own hair, my Mama cried again. Okay, so I had a family meeting with my brother and sister about this. Why is Mama so sensitive to hair? They told me a story of when Mama was small, Grandma cut her hair. It was really traumatic for her because she was 14 and her hair went past her butt.

The story goes that they had an argument and my Grandma threw scissors at my Mama when she was angry and then when Mama threw the scissors back, Grandma started to chase Mama and all she could catch was the long braided pony tail of Mamas hair, and she pulled it and cut it off. I asked my Mama about this and asked her if that was why she wanted no one to touch our hair and she said that was really bad, but it had nothing to do with her not wanting us to cut our hair. I told her I wanted to understand and she said she wanted to understand too, so together we were looking for something online that could explain the feelings she had. Then we found it. This article tells us the truth about hair and why Indians would keep their hair long.

I copied and pasted this little piece from the article:

“Hair is an extension of the nervous system, it can be correctly seen as exteriorized nerves, a type of highly evolved ‘feelers’ or ‘antennae’ that transmit vast amounts of important information to the brain stem, the limbic system, and the neocortex.

Not only does hair in people, including facial hair in men, provide an information highway reaching the brain, hair also emits energy, the electromagnetic energy emitted by the brain into the outer environment. This has been seen in Kirlian photography when a person is photographed with long hair and then rephotographed after the hair is cut. When hair is cut, receiving and sending transmissions to and from the environment are greatly hampered. This results in numbing-out. Cutting of hair is a contributing factor to unawareness of environmental distress in local ecosystems. It is also a contributing factor to insensitivity in relationships of all kinds.”

Wow. My Mama’s feelings are always right about everything. So many times she just “knows” things and people are so slow to catch up. I know she gets sad sometimes that people need everything explained or proven but she is happy that the internet exists that we can look for the proof that people need. When we were looking for what keeping your hair natural means, we also found the story of Sampson and Delilah in the Bible. When Delilah cut Sampson’s hair, the once undefeatable Sampson was defeated. Then we found out that many Native Americans believed that cutting their hair was the same as cutting their spirit. (Maybe that is why they did scalping too, to cut the spirit of their enemies). The long hair for Native Americans also represents the strength of their spirit. They believe the longer the hair, the stronger the spirit, and why only certain people are allowed to touch your hair. When a Native cuts their hair, traditionally it was only for mourning. Also, when a Native does cut their hair, they have to dispose of their hair in a ceremonious way. In the Lakota tribe, they put their hair that was cut off in a river, a creek, a stream, or other water. They believe that since they are a part of the earth, they always have to put parts of themselves back into the earth.

My friend the Shaman and Medical QiGong Doctor, Dennis, told me that when we look at hair we should think about the electrostatic properties of hair. He said that hair is not an ac/dc electrical conductor, but it is highly reactive to static fields. Human hair is also where we store extra energy or chi for our body. When you reach great states of peace or enlightenment the body starts to secrete what Toaist masters call “the golden elixir”. This is literally the fountain of youth in spirituality.

Sometimes when we go places, people look at my brother and his long and messy hair and they give him weird looks. He has some braids and some dreads in his hair and it looks like he never brushes it because, well… he doesn’t. But it’s funny because when they get to know him, they say he is the most sensitive, intuitive and knowing young man they have ever met. They tell him he looks like Jesus. In the Old Testament, the Nazirites would go for long periods of time without cutting their hair to show devotion to God. And in ancient Greece, long male hair was a symbol of wealth and power, while a shaven head was appropriate for a slave. Maybe that is why Zack was a Young Shaman or why now he has created Mount Olympus and Unite The Gods. The ancient Greeks had several Gods and heroes who wore their hair long, including Zeus, Achilles, Apollo, and Poseidon. Greek soldiers are said to have worn their hair long in battle. Such warriors considered it a sign of aristocracy and are said to have combed it openly in order to show off.

And here is a cool fact: It has been proven scientifically that people who have long hair tend to be less tired, more energetic and less likely to become depressed. (No wonder my brother is always so happy and can skate all day and then play piano all night!) People who have long hair also conserve energy and don’t feel the cold of winter the same as people with short hair. A person who has regularly cut hair wastes his body’s energy. A person who cuts his hair over his lifetime forces the body to grow 22 meters of replacement hair. A person who keeps his hair only produces 1.5 meters of hair over his lifetime. That is a really big difference and a lot of energy that can be used for other things.

Finally, my mom emailed me some cool facts about Vitamin D and hair. Did you know that the brain needs vitamin D, energy, phosphorus, and metals? This article says that “the number of units of vitamin D that these hairs provide immediately to the brain is unbelievable. Shaving causes vitamin ‘D’ deficiency and this vitamin, in its turn, is directly concerned with the calcium metabolism of the whole organism.  Hair is the most potent, purest form of protein in the world. The very root of the hair has the oil of the protein. This oil is enough to support your brain through any activity. Hair is the pranic antenna. It is energy, pure protein. Hardly 0.5% of the protein that we take in with our daily diet, is spent on the upkeep of hair. On the other hand, trimmed hair consumes much more protein because this has to be spent on the re-growth of the hair. The hair helps to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight. It also helps to supply the pituitary gland (located in the head) with phosphorous. Phosphorous is an element which is used in meditation by the pituitary gland. This page has MANY FACTS ABOUT HAIR.

Mama said that the pituitary gland is the seat of the soul and what connects us to Source and all of the powers of the Universe. She was right all along about hair and that is why I do not question her feelings when they are strong. I am going to leave my hair alone and I am happy for Zack’s hair, it keeps him happy, healthy and filled with energy and love. Zanna wears her hair long too and I know she’ll keep it that way because like the saying says, Mama knows best, at least ours does! I love you Mama!

* Special Thanks to Zanna who writes as I am talking and makes me sound like an awesome writer. She is the one who writes most of my blog posts and sometimes Mama edits and checks to make sure we didn’t leave something out.

Zynnia Shares If You Were My Bunny

Zynnia talks about the book If You Were My Bunny is still one of her favorites to this day…

The sweet, soothing sounds of a mother’s words come through loud and clear in this small book. A mother rabbit tells her little ones that she could pick them out from all the other babies, and she sings a bunny version of “Hush, Little Baby,” with lines like “if that carrot top should wilt, / Mama’s going to bring you a clover quilt.” Then a bear, a cat, a duck, a dog, and finally a human mother tell their children how much they love them. McMullan’s clever use of familiar songs (“Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “Rock-a-bye Baby,” among others) adds to the charm of this child pleaser. So do McPhail’s pictures, which, though occasionally stiffly executed, are full of tenderness and love. A cuddlesome bedtime choice.

Mission “Character is Magnetic”

Zanna & Zynnia wanted to get creative with spreading the message of our friend Mr. King, whose website teaches youth about truth, integrity, values & character. We visited random parking lots where the girls stuck NON HARMFUL magnets to the vehicles and then we would sit and watch how the people would react as they discovered the messages. It actually prompted several very inspiring conversations about volunteering, how kids no longer have “old fashioned fun” and people showed a generally happy and pleasantly suprised attitude. We had a lot of fun doing it.
